Senior year has a way of sneaking up on families. One minute it feels like freshman year just started, and the next you are planning graduation, yearbook deadlines, senior events, and everything that comes with the final year of high school.
Planning Your Senior Photos and when Should You Book? One of the best things you can do to make senior year feel less stressful is plan your senior photo session early.
At LaVoie Photography, we photograph seniors throughout Willamette Valley and beyond, and one of the most common questions we hear is: “When should we book senior photos?” The answer really depends on the look and experience you want, but booking ahead always gives you the most flexibility.
The Best Time of Year for Senior Photos to Consider When Planning Your Senior Photos: When Should You Book?
Every season offers something a little different, and there really is no wrong choice. It all comes down to your style and schedule.
Summer Senior Sessions

Summer is one of the most popular times for senior photos, especially for students wanting a relaxed schedule before the busy school year begins.
Summer sessions offer:
• Warm evenings and golden sunsets
• Green landscapes and nature backgrounds
• More flexibility in schedules
• Time to receive photos before school starts - Some schools require yearbook images as early as September.
Summer is also a great option for seniors involved in fall sports and activities who know their schedules will become hectic later in the year.

Fall Senior Sessions
Fall sessions are incredibly popular in Oregon for a reason. The colors, softer light, and cozy atmosphere photograph beautifully.

Fall sessions are perfect for:
• Golden tones and autumn colors
• Comfortable temperatures
• Layered outfits and cozy styles
• Vineyard, park, and forest locations
Because fall dates are some of the first to fill, we always recommend booking early if this is the season you are hoping for.
Spring Senior Sessions
Spring sessions are a great option for seniors wanting flowers, fresh greenery, or cap and gown photos closer to graduation.

Spring is especially great for:
• Tulip fields and blooming flowers
• Cap and gown sessions
• Mild weather returning
• Celebrating the final months of senior year
These sessions can also work well for students who missed earlier yearbook deadlines but still want meaningful senior portraits before graduation.
Why Booking Early Matters
One of the biggest advantages of booking early is having more options.
Popular sunset times and weekends tend to fill quickly, especially during summer and fall. Booking ahead also gives us flexibility if Oregon weather decides not to cooperate.
Planning early also allows time for:
• Graduation announcements
• Prints and albums
• Party decorations
• Gifts for family members
• Less stress during senior year
Senior year already moves fast enough. Having photos planned ahead of time helps make the experience much more enjoyable.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
A good rule of thumb is:
• Summer sessions: book during spring
• Fall sessions: book by mid to late summer
• Spring cap and gown sessions: book during winter or early spring
Even if you are not completely sure on details yet, reaching out early helps secure a spot on the calendar.
Choosing the Right Location
One of the best parts about senior sessions is choosing a location that reflects your personality and style.
Some seniors love open fields, flower farms, or parks. Others prefer an urban look, downtown streets, sports locations, or even the Oregon coast.
We photograph sessions throughout Newberg, Beaverton,Tigard, Sherwood, the surrounding Willamette Valley, and beyond, helping seniors create a session that feels personal and unique to them.
Senior photos are more than just yearbook pictures. They capture an exciting season of life before everything changes.

The best sessions happen when there is time to plan outfits, locations, and ideas that truly reflect who you are. Booking early gives us the flexibility to create a relaxed and meaningful experience without the pressure of last-minute deadlines.
If you are starting to think about senior photos for the upcoming school year, now is a great time to begin planning your session with LaVoie Photography.
